Dietary Fat

Each serving of Rocky Road dessert has 7 grams of total fat, including 3.5 grams of saturated fat.

Total Sugars

One serving of Breyers Rocky Road dessert treat has 18 grams of total sugars, including 14 grams of added sugars.

This does not come as a surprise for two reasons. First, it is an ice cream style dessert so I expect the ingredients to include added sugars as well as natural sugars found in the milk.

The other reason is that sugar and liquid sugar are listed as two of the top three ingredients. And since food manufacturers must list ingredients in order of dominance by weight, I expect the amount of added sugars to be fairly high.

Limit Added Sugars

Dietary Guidelines set by the FDA recommend limiting the number of calories from added sugars to less than 10% of total calories consumed throughout the day. With that in mind, the 14 grams in one serving of Rocky Road is about 28% of the limit (based on a 2,000 calorie diet).

Ice Cream vs Frozen Dairy Dessert

While I would typically think of this as ice cream, Breyers markets it as a frozen dairy dessert. So I did a little research to figure out the difference. I learned that the primary difference between ice cream and a frozen dairy dessert is the use of oil as a main ingredient.

Real ice cream is made with 100% dairy. The FDA requires desserts labeled as ice cream to contain 10% or more milkfat. Desserts made vegetable oils do not typically meet that requirement and are therefore called a frozen dessert.

You may still find products labeled as ice cream that contain oil. The reason is typically due to other flavors, candies, or cookies blended in with the real ice cream rather than the ice cream itself.

For example, Haagen-Dazs chocolate ice cream contains no oil, but its Rocky Road ice cream is made with safflower oil.

In the case of Breyers frozen dairy dessert, the ingredients coconut oil and sunflower seed oil. Moreover, as you can see from the list of ingredients, sugars and water are high on the list. This dessert doesn’t meet the 10% milkfat requirement to be called ice cream.
