Choosing the Best Burger

As you decide which of these burgers might be at the top of your list of the best options, consider the following points.

  • Hamburger. The hamburger has the least amount of carbohydrates per serving. However, it has the highest proportion of carb calories to total calories. That’s because a single flame-grilled beef patty is served on the same size sesame seed bun as the other burgers, which have more beef and other toppings. Carbohydrates in the hamburger contribute about 110 calories, which is 44% of the total 250 calories per serving.
  • Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper. This newer menu item is made with 1/4 lb beef patty, BBQ sauce, crispy onions, jalapenos, maple candied bacon, and American cheese. With those additional toppings, the amount of carbohydrates reaches 78 grams per serving. Total calories also increase significantly. One Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper contains 880 total calories. Accordingly, the percentage of carb calories is 35% of the total calories per serving.
  • Bacon King. If you’re watching the total carbs in your diet, don’t jump to the Bacon King without knowing how the nutritional value of this burger stacks up against the rest. As you can see, carbohydrates contribute 18% of total calories, the smallest proportion when compared to the other burgers on the menu. That’s not because it has the least carbs. Rather, the Bacon King has the highest total calories. With two 1/4 lb patties, bacon, melted cheese, and mayonnaise, one serving contains a whopping 81 grams of dietary fat. A Bacon King has 1,200 total calories.

Calories, Fat, and Sodium in Burgers

Total calories in the burger options at Burger King range from a low of 250 in the Hamburger to 1,200 calories in one Bacon King. Avoid high-calorie options by selecting burgers with a single patty vs the double patty and triple patty cheeseburgers.

In addition to the total calories and fat per serving, be mindful that fast food menus generally contain a high amount of sodium. The American Heart Association recommends limiting total daily sodium to less than 2,300 milligrams (based on a 2,000 calorie diet). The organizations goes on to state an ideal sodium intake is closer to 1,500 milligrams, but individual needs vary.

  • Lowest Calorie Burger. A Hamburger has 250 total calories, the fewest of all the options on the burger menu. Dietary fat contributes 36% of total calories.
  • Highest Fat. The Texas Double Whopper and Triple Whopper are packed with calories, most of which are derived from total fats. With two beef patties, cheese, and bacon, dietary fat contributes over 60% of the 1,090 total calories in a Texas Double Whopper. The Triple Whopper also contains more than 60% of total calories from fat.
  • The Most Sodium. Eight of the burgers contain more than 1,100 milligrams of sodium per serving, including the Whopper, Double Whopper, Triple Whopper, Impossible Whopper, and Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper. Moreover, the amount of sodium in the Texas Double Whopper, Bacon King, and Fried Pickle Ranch Whopper exceeds 2,000 milligrams. Take note that the 2,200 mg of sodium in one Bacon King equates to nearly 100% of the daily value recommended by the FDA.

Reduce the proportion of calories from total dietary fat by selecting veggie toppings such as lettuce, tomato, and pickles instead of cheese, bacon, or multiple beef patties.

  • Chicken Fries. For the same taste and fewer calories, simply order smaller portions. A four-piece order of chicken fries has 8 grams of carbohydrates and 110 total calories. By comparison, the 12-piece order of chicken fries delivers 340 calories.
  • Original Chicken Sandwich. This popular sandwich is made with lightly breaded fried chicken, lettuce, and mayonnaise. It’s served on a sesame seed bun. One original chicken sandwich contains 680 total calories. About 36%, or 245 calories, are derived from carbohydrates.
  • Big Fish Sandwich and Honey Mustard Royal Crispy Wrap. The two sandwiches on this menu that contain the highest percentage of total calories from carbohydrates are the fish sandwich and the crispy chicken wrap with honey mustard sauce. While both sandwiches derive approximately 40% of total calories from carbs, the Big Fish has 570 total calories, nearly double the 290 total calories in the wrap.

Onion rings, french fries, and mozzarella fries are available in various sizes, including the value size (the smallest size), small, medium, and large.

Side dish options also include chicken nuggets and chicken fries, which are covered in the section above.

Unless otherwise noted, the nutritional values for all of the side dishes listed in the table below are based on a size medium. Mozzarella Fries and Cheesy Tots are also available in a smaller four-piece serving size.

Medium order of Burger King onion rings

The primary ingredient in most of these side dishes is potatoes or onions. Accordingly, the percentage of calories from carbs is higher than the burgers and chicken sandwiches.

  • Classic Fries. A medium order of fries contains 54g carbohydrates, which make up nearly 60% of the total calories.
  • Onion Rings. The onion rings also derive over half of the total calories from carbohydrates. One medium order has 48 grams of carbs.
  • Have-sies. If you can’t seem to decide whether you want to snack on fries or onion rings, don’t order one of each. Instead, try the Have-sies, which combines the two side dishes into one.

As you can see from the table above, most of the breakfast sandwiches contain the same total amount of carbohydrates per serving. The sandwiches served on a croissant have 120 calories derived from carbs and the biscuit delivers about 130 carb calories per sandwich.

That said, depending on the sandwich fixings, the percentage of total calories from carbs varies significantly. In general, menu items with the least “% of total calories” from carbs have the highest total calories per serving.

Here are a couple examples to clarify what that means:

  • Double Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit. A Double Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit is served with two sausage patties, two slices of American cheese, and an egg. One serving contains 550 total calories. By comparison, the simpler Egg & Cheese Biscuit sandwich has only 370 total calories. Both sandwiches are served on the same type and size buttermilk biscuit. As such, the first sandwich with more protein, fat, and total calories will have less calories from carbohydrates (as a percentage of total calories).
  • Pancake Platter. On the other hand, nearly three quarters of the 440 total calories in a pancake platter are derived from carbohydrates. As you can guess, pancakes are made primarily with carbs. Burger King doesn’t publish ingredients, but pancake recipes typically include flour, milk, sugar, and leavening agents. If you select the platter with sausage, the carb calories decline to about 52% of the total because total calories increase to 620. Most of that increase is due to an increase in fat and protein.
  • Pancake Platter has 12g fat, 79g carbs, 5g protein
  • Pancake & Sausage Platter has 29g fat, 79g carbs, 13g protein

Depending on individual health goals and the nutrition advice from a physician, compare the amount of carbs in each breakfast dish. Rather than double up on the number of sausage patties in a single meal, a healthier option may be a single patty sandwich or an Egg & Cheese Croissan’Wich.

That said, individuals who monitor the amount of dietary cholesterol in their meals may prefer French Toast Sticks or Hash Browns, which have zero cholesterol per serving.

Tips for Choosing Which Meal to Order

It’s good practice to follow a balanced diet. Avoid foods with a high amount of added sugars which deliver extra calories without other important nutrients such as dietary fiber.

Develop a better understanding of how many calories, carbs, dietary fat, and sodium are in your diet with a food journal.

The act of writing down the nutritional value of food can help you set goals based on your individual dietary needs, which may differ from the FDA’s general nutrition advice or the daily diet that is best for your friends or family members.

Rather than choosing breakfast or lunch based solely on taste or appetite, review Burger King nutrition facts to help ensure you are getting the actual daily nutrient requirements you need based on the advice of your physician.

As with most fast food restaurants, many of the meals at Burger King contain a significant amount of sodium per serving. According to the CDC, a high sodium intake can lead to an increase in blood pressure and risk of heart disease.

SUMMARY OF TIPS

  • Avoid foods with high added sugars
  • A food diary can help you better understand daily value of foods consumed
  • Review nutrition labels to understand quantity and concentration of macronutrients (fat, carbs, proteins) per serving
  • Don’t forget that fast-food restaurants often serve foods with high amounts of sodium
