Total Sugars

One Chick-fil-A chocolate brownie contains 35 grams of total sugars, which includes both natural sugar and added sugar. In my opinion, this is a fairly high amount of sugar in a single menu item.

Added Sugars

For context, the FDA recommends a limit of 50 grams of added sugars for an entire day.  Even though Chick-fil-A doesn’t separately report added sugars (only total sugars), we are not at a complete loss for information.

  • 140 calories from sugars (38% of total calories).

Sugar is Dominant Ingredient in Brownie

Take a look at the list of ingredients below. Sugar is listed as the first ingredient.

It’s a top ingredient in both the semi-sweet chocolate and the fudge chunks. Knowing that, I assume most of the 36 grams of total sugar are added sugars (vs natural sugars).

Let’s make a conservative assumption that half of the total sugars are added sugars. Even at that likely low level, 18 grams of added sugars is still 36% of the recommended limit for an entire day.

Why is Chocolate Processed with Alkali?

Cocoa alkalization is the process of treating cocoa solids to reduce the natural acidity and thus improve the flavor.  A food-grade alkali solution raises the pH to improve the color and increase the flavor profile of the chocolate.  Another term used that refers to the same process is “dutched” cocoa.

Common alkali solutions used in processing cocoa include potassium carbonate, calcium carbonate, and sodium hydroxide.  Depending on the solution, the resulting color ranges from a light red to a dark charcoal black.

The following menu items and packaged foods also contain cocoa processed with alkali:

The brownie from Chick-fil-A is made with ingredients that contain dairy, egg, soy, and wheat.

Do Chick-fil-A Brownies Have Nuts?

Tree nuts and peanuts are listed as two of the top five major food allergens in the U.S. Accordingly, it’s no surprise that when it comes to these brownies, the question “Do Chick-fil-A Brownies Have Nuts?” is asked more than any other.

The short answer is: No. There are no nuts in the brownie. Not as of the date this post was published or updated.

That said, be aware that suppliers may follow different procedures and some manufacturing facilities may produce other food products for multiple restaurants.

As such, Chick-fil-A foods may come into contact with other food items. So even if a recipe is made without nuts, milk, eggs, or gluten, the foods or ingredients may come into contact with foods that contain potential allergens.

We always recommend that you review and confirm the ingredients at your local restaurant.

Additional Information

My Calculation of Calories

When I calculate the total calories based on the quantity of macronutrients provided by Chick-fil-A (as of the date this article is updated), the total may be closer to 390 per serving.

It’s a fairly small difference, but I think it’s interesting to understand how to calculate the amount of energy generated from nutrients in food.

Calories are derived from what are referred to as macronutrients, which are the components in food that provide energy used by the body. You are familiar with the terms fat, carbohydrates, and protein. Those are macronutrients and each provides a different level of calories (aka, energy).

How to Calculate Calories in a Chick-fil-A Brownie

Calculating the number of calories in any food item is straight forward when you have the quantity of macronutrients (fat, carbs, and protein). You don’t need to be a certified nutritionist to do this math. You simply need to know the following conversions:

  • One gram of fat delivers 9 calories
  • One gram of carbohydrates delivers 4 calories
  • One gram of protein delivers 4 calories

Once you’re armed with that information, it’s a simple matter of multiplication and addition. Here is a quick calculation of the total calories for a Chick-fil-A chocolate brownie.

  • 21g fat x 9 calories per gram = 189 calories
  • 47g carbs x 4 calories per gram = 188 calories
  • 4g protein x 4 calories per gram = 16 calories
  • 189 + 188 + 16 = 393 total calories

All that said, nutrition facts for commercial foodstuffs are generally measured in a lab and reported based on various averages. As mentioned above (and shown in the screenshot below), Chick-fil-A reports 370 total calories per brownie.
