What is BHT?

Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) are inorganic food preservatives used in processed foods to maintain freshness. It’s often used in the manufacturing of cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and processed meats such as hot dogs and sausage.

The BHT chemical is also commonly used in the cosmetics industry. BHT is a toluene-based ingredient. You may want to learn more about this ingredient through recent action in California, which banned the use of nail products containing toluene.

Frosted Mini-Wheats Little Bites

Bite-sized wheat biscuits get a little smaller with the Little Bites version of Frosted Mini Wheats cereal.

The size of the cereal is smaller and the total calories per serving is also less when compared with the original version of the cereal. Note, however, that the serving size is also less. One serving of the Little Bites is measured as 56 grams (vs 60 grams).

To create an apples to apples comparison, we can simply calculate calories per gram rather than per serving.

  • Original Frosted Mini-Wheats: 210 calories / 60 grams = 3.5 calories per gram
  • Little Bites: 190 calories / 56 grams = 3.4 calories per gram

As you can see, these Little Bites are just that – a smaller version of the same cereal. The nutrition facts label lists 190 calories per serving, (20 calories less than the original). But, the cereal is essentially the same other than the size. This holds true when you review the list of ingredients, which are exactly the same.
