I have always enjoyed chicken pot pie for dinner. It’s one of my favorite comfort dishes. Today we review the nutrition and ingredients in the dish served at KFC.

What is L-Cysteine Hydrochloride?

L-Cysteine is a semi-essential amino acid, which is important for the efficacy of certain enzymes.  Amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) make up about 20% of the human body.

Hydrochloride, also referred to as hydrochloric acid, is used as an acidifier in soft drinks, cookies, crackers, condiments, and canned vegetables, among other products.  It helps to enhance flavor and reduce food spoilage.

L-Cysteine Hydrochloride is typically used in food production as a dough conditioner and as a supplement in baby food formulas or energy bars  The additive is also used as a preservative to increase the shelf life of processed foods.

It is found in certain high protein foods including beef liver, nuts, soy products, crab and certain vegetables such as lima beans and mushrooms.
