Sugars

The fact that crispy butter flavored cookies have a few grams of sugars is not a surprise. What I would like to point out, however, is that of the 10 grams of total sugars in two cookies, all 10 grams are Added Sugars.

Added Sugars

Added sugars are just that – sugars such as table sugar or corn syrup – that is added to a recipe or as a final part of preparing food. It’s distinguished from natural sugars that are found organically in food. For example, the lactose in milk is considered a natural sugar.

Added Sugars as % of Daily Value

To put this into context, the FDA recommends individuals consume less than 10% of total calories from Added Sugars.

So if you consume 2,000 calories daily, the FDA recommends limiting Added Sugars to 50 grams, which equals 200 calories (10% of 2,000 calories). Likewise, if you normally consume 1,500 calories daily, the recommended limit would be 37.5 grams of Added Sugars (150 calories).

Ingredients and Allergens

Butter Cookies Ingredients

Here is the list of ingredients used to make the Farmhouse Butter Crisp Cookies.

Enriched Wheat Flour, Butter (milk), Brown Sugar (sugar, invert sugar, molasses), Sugar, Eggs, Baking Soda, Vanilla Extract, Salt, Spice Extract, Cinnamon, and Soy Lecithin.

The flour is enriched with Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid.

What is Soy Lecithin?

Lecithin is a food additive generally used as an emulsifier in the production of food.  A naturally occurring fat, it is known to boost metabolism.

Soy Lecithin is extracted from soybeans and composed of choline, fatty acids and phospholipids.  When used as an emulsifier, soy lecithin helps foods combine.  Meaning, it’s used to prevent ingredients in a food item from separating.  For example, creating a homogeneous mixture of oils and water.

One of the most commonly used food emulsifiers is soy lecithin.  Alternative sources include sunflower, egg yolk, guar gum, xanthan gum, and gelatin.

You will find soy lecithin (and other emulsifiers) in mayonnaise, salad dressings, chocolate, soups, sauces, and baked goods, among other processed foods.

Allergens

The Thin & Crispy Butter Cookies are made with ingredients that contain egg, milk, soy, and wheat.
