Overview of FDA Allergen Guidelines

Federal regulations have identified nine major food allergens: eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soybeans, tree nuts, and wheat.

Highly refined oil is exempted from the requirements set by federal regulations oil. As a result, highly refined soybean oil is not considered a common allergen despite being derived from soybeans.

It’s important to understand that fast-food restaurants have limited preparation space and also partner with food suppliers. Because of this, food and beverages may be prepared or cooked using shared equipment.

Fried foods, for example, are cooked in common oil. Some products may be prepared or packaged in a shared factory that handles multiple food and/or beverage items. As such, even foods made without a declared food allergen may risk contact with allergens through cross-contamination.
