What is Annatto Extract?

Annatto is an orange/red condiment and food coloring derived from the seeds of the achiote tree.  It is primarily used in foods for its coloring properties, creating a yellow or orange product.

The achiote tree is indigenous to Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.  The seeds contain compounds called carotenoids, which provide the vibrant color.
