Did You Know?

Here are a few interesting points to keep in mind when reviewing meal options at fast food restaurants.

  • Restaurants are not required to declare highly refined oils, even if derived from a common allergen.
  • Gluten, pea protein, and MSG are not recognized by the FDA as major allergens.
  • Some foods are made with unexpected ingredients. Fast food hamburger and hot dog buns, for example, may contain milk.
  • Individuals may have a sensitivity to ingredients that are not declared as allergens. As an example, maltitol syrup is a sugar substitute that can induce a laxative effect.

Read our reports for a list of menu items made with one or more food allergens as well as a separate list of food and drink options made without gluten or other allergens.

Recipes and/or suppliers may vary by location or change without notice. Ask the restaurant manager to confirm the most up-to-date list of allergens.

  • Supplier facilities, kitchen operations, and restaurant staff utilize shared spaces, tools, and equipment. As a result, restaurants can only declare ingredients used in a recipe. Because of the risk of cross-contamination, even foods made without common allergens may contain or come in contact with allergens. Restaurants cannot guarantee food safety.
